An adviser to Barack Obama says Senator Joe Lieberman lied when he addressed the Republican Convention on Tuesday night. Lieberman faces retaliation from Democrats.

Barack Obama adviser, Robert Gibbs, told CNN's Larry King Live that Lieberman lied when he said the Obama does not work well with Republicans.

"Lieberman ought to be ashamed of himself for some of the things he said tonight, not as a Democrat but as an American," he said.

A registered Democrat, Lieberman won reelection as an Independent in Connecticut. The senator could shift control of the Senate to Republicans if he declared himself a member of the GOP.

Many Democrats are appalled that their 2000 vice presidential candidate is now a visible and vocal supporter of Republican John McCain.

On Tuesday night, Lieberman told delegates at the Republican national Convention that Senator Obama has not reached across party lines to achieve anything significant in the U.S. Senate.

Gibbs called that "a lie," noting Obama worked with Senator Richard Lugar, a Republican in Indiana, to keep nuclear weapons from terrorists. Gibbs also noted that the Democratic presidential nominee worked with Senator Tom Coburn, a Republican in Oklahoma, on the federal budget.
