The Obama campaign picked up 500,000 new donors during the month of August. Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate John McCain are dead even in opinion polls. John McCain raised $47 million in private fundraising during the month of August. The Arizona senator has access to $84 million cash immediately available. Obama broke his February all-time high of $55 million in August. Some analysts say that even though Obama raised more money in funding, the Illinois senator may not have as much advantage when it comes to advertising spending. McCain benefits from money contributed to the coffers of the Republican National Committee, which has been more successful at raising money than the Democratic Party.
