Bennigan's had run into financial trouble earlier this year by defaulting on a loan payment.

Bennigan's restaurants and Steak and Ale chains are closing, but it was unclear if the restaurant chains were shutting down permanently.

Bennigan's, which is part of the Steak and Ale, Ponderosa and Bonanza restaurant chains, are closing several restaurants nationwide in the wake of a bankruptcy filing.

Several Bennigan's and Steak and Ale restaurants are closing its doors nationwide, but it was unclear if the chains were shutting down permanently.

The restaurant chains are owned by Metromedia Restaurants Group in Plano, Texas, did not disclose any official statement, but employees acknowledged that some Steak and Ales and Bennigan's are shutting down indefinitely as of 7am this morning.

Last month, there were reports that Metromedia had violated terms of a loan agreement with GE Capital Solutions and had prepared a bankruptcy filing.

However, the company denied it had prepared such a filing.

Media reports elsewhere indicated that Bennigan's restaurants across the country were shutting down on Tuesday. Closures were reported in Colorado, Illinois, Texas, Florida and New Jersey.
