Cisco Systems Inc today launched a new collaboration portfolio designed to help business technology companies. The products allow companies to communicate between applications and devices using the same IT infrastructure.

"Collaboration is the next phase of the Internet, a phase that analysts see as a $34 billion market opportunity, and at the center of this phase is the network," said Don Proctor, senior vice president, software group, Cisco.

Proctor says that the new platform uses open-standards protocols for critical collaboration services. These services include instant messaging and call control policies. The platform can connect to a brand range of devices and applications.

The Cisco collaboration portfolio uses this existing network architecture to create an integrated collaboration experience. This allows communications from simple text messaging to Cisco TelePresence sessions.

The new Unified Communications System Release 7 offers significant improvements in total cost of ownership with business applications. The TelePresence Expert on Demand is a contact center which allows online meetings between colleagues or clients. The Web 2.0 Applications Platform offers instant messaging and Web meetings to and from business applications.

While using the network as the platform, developers can use the open architecture and programming API interface. It supports end-user customization and can integrate third-party applications.

The open architecture also allows communication capabilities among a range of devices which include Windows and Mac OS desktops, mobile phones running Symbian, BlackBerry, and Windows Mobile operating system.

The Unified Communications System Release 7.0 and Cisco TelePresenceExpert on Demand are available immediately. WebEx Connect is currently available as a desktop and Web-based client. Support mobile cell phones is scheduled to be available in early 2009.
