Cisco Systems Inc on Wednesday unveiled its new Cisco Nexus switch framework. The switch takes advantage of VMware's vNetwork Distributed technology. It also maintains a virtual machine-centric management model. The software is used with the Nexus 5000 series.

The Cisco Nexus 1000V lets the server administrator to configure networks and security services in a real-time environment. The switch also has Mobile VM security which moves with a virtual machine during live migration. This is used to ensure a persistent network for security and storage policies.

The business technology company said the switch is based on its NX-OS software. It is designed to replace the basic switch that ships with VMware ESX. Moreover, the unit is optimized for 1-Gbps and 10-Gbps architectures.

Network administrators can define network policy by selecting the appropriate Port Profile within the application. The application can provide consistent provisioning and management of the network while maintaining the server administrator's flexibility. This is used to rapidly deploy VMs.

Cisco says the new switch is now available.
