Global Warming Melts Arctic Ocean Summer Ice
The Arctic Ocean sea ice has shattered last year's record low. The ice continues to vanish from global warming. The extent of the sea ice cover is also smaller since the 1980s.Scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado are raising concerns. This year's Arctic Ocean sea ice has shrunk to its second smallest area on record. As a matter of fact, the record low is close to 2007's record low. Global warming is blamed for the decrease in Arctic ice. Some scientists believe that the ice may completely disappear within a few decades. The North Pole sea ice fills most of the Arctic Ocean during the winter. The ice then shrinks in the summer heat. However, with additional heating due to global warming, the extent of sea ice cover continues to shrink. This has scientists concerned. This problem heats up the Arctic and the planet more than the greenhouse effect. The ice is melting more on its own. Scientists predict that the Arctic could lose its summer ice by the year 2030.
