Tropical Storm Gustav entered the Gulf of Mexico after killing 23 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

Gustav is expected to become a major category 3 to category 5 hurricane as it aims for New Orleans and other Gulf states. Landfall could be anywhere between Texas to the Florida Panhandle.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall on Monday, two days after the third anniversary of hurricane Katrina. Katrina killed more than 1,500 people, caused at least 80 billion in damage and left thousands of residents homeless.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has placed the city of New Orleans on high alert. Jindal said that evacuations could begin as early as Friday.

Gustav is the seventh storm of the 2008 hurricane season.

An eighth storm has already formed in the Atlantic. Tropical storm Hanna is located about 305 miles northeast of the northern Leeward islands.

Hanna is moving west-northwest at about 12 miles per hour. Maximum sustained winds were recorded near 40 mph.

The National Hurricane Center said Hanna will strengthen into a hurricane this weekend. Wind speeds are expected to be about 80 mph.

Computer hurricane models showed Hanna moving northwest, then an unusual turn to the west toward Florida.
