The recent Gallup poll reports that Republican presidential hopeful John McCain is in the lead with 49 percent. Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama drops to 44 percent.

The poll results are based on September 5-7 interviewing. They are the first in which all interviews were conducted following the completion of the GOP convention. McCain had a six-point bounce.

Barack Obama had a four-point bounce following the Democratic National Convention.

Prior to the Republican National Convention, polls showed McCain with 43 percent support among registered voters. Today, the Gallup credits McCain with 49 percent. The current Gallup for McCain is his best performance to date.

McCain has led Obama in each of the three individual convention nights. The real question is whether he can sustain the lead as voter excitement around the convention fades.
