MySpace Music and four major labels will launch a new digital music download service on Thursday. The social network Web site will compete against Apple Inc iTunes. The new music service is offering free and unlimited audio streaming and DRM-free MP3 downloads.

MySpace Music, which is owned by News Corp, is launching a new music service to offer DRM-free MP3 downloads and free unlimited audio streaming. The music labels will partner with MySpace to compete against Apple Inc's iTunes.

The new launch promotion also includes a sale through Amazon MP3 and ringtones powered by Jamster. It remains to be seen if Universal Music will continue to limit streams of its artists' music to 90 seconds.

The search capabilities on the Web site have also been greatly enhanced. In addition, the site announced a new Toolset that allows members of the MySpace Music community to download, stream and personalize their music content. It allows users to create play-lists for personal and public consumption. Visitors can stream the play-listed content on-demand and purchase MP3s of songs.

Unlike the music from Apple iTunes store, the music sold through MySpace's new service won't contain the protections that limit how many times a track can be copied.

MySpace Music will eventually offer ticketing and merchandise sales opportunities for labels and artists. The social networking site has 35 million unique visitors per month.
