Just a week after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Kennedy took the helm of his sailboat, "Mya," and took part in a regatta from Nantucket back home to Hyannis Port, Massachusetts.

"Well, it couldn’t be a more beautiful day," Kennedy said on his private pier. "We have wonderful friends and family. It’s a tradition out here and we had a great day."

A friend who was on board as a crew member says the senator was "at the helm the whole way," leading the boat to "the head of the fleet."

Kennedy had planned to compete in the event even after doctors found the tumor. He missed the outward leg on Saturday, but got up early today and took a ferry to Nantucket to take part in today's race.

Also on board were his wife, Vicki, Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, and relatives. Kennedy said afterward he relished the company of "great friends and family."

He and his wife wouldn't publicly discuss his upcoming treatment. Doctors are considering chemotherapy, radiation or a combination to treat the tumor that caused a seizure on May 17th. Treatment could start as early as this week.
