The first RIAA jury trial is underway, and the Recording Industry Association of America is asking the country to pay attention.
Jammie Thomas, 30, is accused of illegally sharing over 1,700 song duplications on Kazaa. Thomas said she never had Kazaa on her computer, and destroyed her hard drive at the time the RIAA claims the illegal sharing took place.
On behalf of six major record companies, the RIAA has filed over 26,000 lawsuits for similar copyright infringement.
The trade organization says it wants to establish that music has value and the property must be respected.
If the RIAA wins the jury trial case, it will no doubt set a landmark for copyright protection.
The closing arguments happened this morning and the jurors have started deliberations.
