Roseville police have confirmed that the man suspected of injuring four officers during a shooting has surrendered to police. Sammy Duran, a 32-year-old parolee at-large, surrendered at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.
Duran had been holed up in a house near 6th and Hampton Streets for most of Friday evening. He looked to be uninjured when he was taken into custody. Duran will be taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, as standard procedure, before being booked at Placer County Jail, police note.
SWAT sent in a robot a little after 10:45 p.m. after they lost contact with Duran. The robot helped relay commands from police to Duran, demanding him to come out and surrender.
Duran came out of the home unarmed, police note.
The injured officers, which include three from Roseville Police and an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agent, were all taken to the hospital. Their conditions range from fair to serious — with one officer expected to be released from the hospital soon, authorities told FOX40.
At about 3 p.m. Friday, an officer with Immigration Customs Enforcement was shot in the leg.
Duran was identified as the suspect in the shooting.
Three officers, all veterans of the Roseville Police Department, were then injured during a later exchange of gunfire, after Duran fled. One was hit by bullet fragments, one was shot in the jaw and the other shot in the shoulder.
One of the officers is listed in serious condition.
Another officer and the ICE agent were listed as stable and alert at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
The officer injured by bullet fragments was released from the hospital late Friday evening.
Police were able to pin Duran inside a home in a neighborhood at Sixth Street and Hampton Drive, where a standoff ensued until he surrendered.
Several schools in the area were locked down during the standoff.
One at-home day care kept its kids inside into the nighttime hours, despite the fact that some of the children had been there since 6:30 a.m.
Law enforcement officers had been looking for Duran in the area for at least 10 days before finding him on Friday afternoon, Roseville police spokesman Cal Walstad said. When they found him, Walstad added, he opened fire, wounding the federal immigration officer, who was on the scene to provide support for the Roseville police.
Duran has been tied to gang activity in the past, Wastad said.
